Creating the dramatic and mesmerizing magic wand spell whoosh

In this project, I set out to create the Magic wand spell sounds similar to the sound effects you would hear in the motion film Harry Potter. The original post inspiration came from a post written by McGee and special guest, Akash Thakkar over at Pro Sound Effects.
I am combining and layering stock sounds from the Audioslug library to create the magic spell sound. Combining sounds is not a new idea. I first used this idea, creating kick drums. One kick sound is Ok, but two with one slightly extended or offset can add verity to your music sound.
Sound design is a little bit like cooking. You follow the recipe the first time and then after that you experiment with the ingredients.
Here’s what I used in my recipe: flames, hissy firework launches, tank impacts, wind chimes, engine drone sounds.
To merge the sounds, I used Adobe Audition. Using Audition to Sound design allowed me the flexibility to position the sound and add the desired reverb effect. You could use Logic Pro or Garageband or similar to create your unique sound.
